What Is Jeuveau?
Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a botulinum toxin type A formulation manufactured by Evolus. It received FDA approval on February 1, 2019, specifically for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines — the vertical frown lines that form between the eyebrows. According to Mount Sinai's health publication, it was the first new neurotoxin for cosmetic use to receive FDA approval in more than a decade, developed exclusively for aesthetic purposes rather than adapted from a medical treatment.
How It Compares to Botox
Jeuveau and Botox work the same way — both block the nerve signals that cause targeted muscles to contract, softening the wrinkles those muscles create. The meaningful differences come down to formulation, approval history, and trial data. In a head-to-head Phase III clinical trial, prabotulinumtoxinA (Jeuveau) demonstrated non-inferiority to onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox Cosmetic), with statistically significant improvement over placebo still evident even 150 days after treatment. A separate industry review of that same trial data noted that Jeuveau achieved a slightly higher responder rate than Botox at Day 30 (87.2% vs. 82.8%) and was numerically favored in the majority of exploratory endpoints measured.
One other notable difference: Jeuveau's FDA approval is narrower than Botox's. Jeuveau is currently approved only for glabellar lines, while Botox carries broader FDA approval covering forehead lines and crow's feet as well as several non-cosmetic medical uses. That doesn't affect how well Jeuveau works for its approved use — it simply means the two products have been studied and cleared for different specific indications.
Onset and Duration
Most people begin seeing results within a few days of treatment, with full effect typically visible by around day 30. Results generally last three to four months, though some clinical data suggests duration may extend up to five months for certain patients. As with any neuromodulator, individual results vary based on dosing, muscle strength, and metabolism.
